Participants in the 1982 Games had a taste of army life, when they were accommodated at the Fort Wainwright Military Base near Fairbanks, Alaska. The 15 sports featured were badminton, basketball, cross country skiing, curling, figure skating, gymnastics, hockey, indoor soccer, Inuit Games, judo, shooting, snowshoe biathlon, snowshoeing, table tennis and volleyball. A full cultural program including special performances rounded out this set of Games.

The eighteenth Arctic Winter Games was held in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo in Northern Alberta.
Alaska brought great awareness and much promotion to this edition of the Arctic Winter Games.
